The BEST Time to Take Engagement/Wedding Photos

“When is the absolute BEST time to take engagement/wedding photos? “

If you are a future bride, this is most likely a question that has crossed your mind. Obviously, everyone wants to look their best in their photos, and we are here to tell you about a simple trick that will take your photos from average to stunning!

Surprise, there’s a lot more to it than just your outfit and the talent of a photographer. Lighting is a crucial part of the photos. It sets the mood, enhances settings, and much more. Sure, a great photographer can figure out how to work with anything, but doing this one thing is the key to amazing photos; simply choosing a great time to take your engagement and wedding photos.

So when is that perfect time? Morning, afternoon, mid-day, evening?

Here is our professional opinion with a few tips thrown in:

  • Right at sunrise or right before sunset is the ideal time to take engagement/wedding photos (specifically, you want to aim for an hour after sunrise or an hour before sunset)
  • You don’t want the sun to be right above you. It causes unneeded and unflattering shadows onto those being photographed. If taking photos in the summer, it also often tends to be the hottest time of the day and can make for an uncomfortable shoot.
  • If not possible, find a well-shaded area. There’s nothing a little shade can’t solve! Find a spot that has non-patchy shade but isn’t overly dark.

If you have any questions, be sure to ask your photographer or leave a comment below. We would love to hear your thoughts, questions, and opinions!

As an avid outdoorsman, I’m always pushing myself–and my scars are the evidence. From falling through the ice on Payette Lake (while on a quick romantic get away–kind of a mood crusher) and crashing while mountain biking in the Boise foothills, I’d rather be at the forefront of adventure than in the back seat. I’ll take my scars over complacency any day. I crave a life of new experiences and desperately want this for you, too. I believe photography embodies freedom and exploration, so let’s adventure together. We’re swapping the stiff posing for kayaking, the forced smiles for hiking. Pick your adventure. I’ll bring the camera.
